Phase 3b: cvc words

Children entering Phase 3b have been taught all the sounds of the alphabet and the consonant digraph sounds. They should be able to blend phonemes to read and spell CVC words. The purpose of this phase is to teach 15 long vowel and 'r' controlled digraphs:


ai /ai/, ee /ee/, igh /igh/, oa /oa/, oi /oi/, oo /o-o/, oo /oo/, ow /ow/, ar /ar/, air /air/, ear /ear/, ur /ur/, or /or/, ure /ure/, er /schwa/ 


After this phase children will know 42 common sounds (the additional sounds /zh/ and /yoo/ are taught at Phase Five).  They will learn to read some more tricky words and also begin to learn to spell some of these words.
